Creating a comfortable, sheltered outdoor space is a priority for many New Zealand homeowners, whether it is to add privacy, reduce wind, or gain year-round usability under a SunPivot® or SunFold® louvre roof. Solarzip® outdoor blinds are designed to integrate with Bask® louvre systems seamlessly. They also offer a flexible shading and protection solution for decks, patios, pergolas, and other structures.
Below, we answer the most common questions about Solarzip® outdoor blinds to help you decide whether they’re the right addition to your outdoor living area.
Where can Solarzip® outdoor blinds be used?
Solarzip® blinds are designed for a wide range of outdoor settings, including:
- Bask SunPivot® and SunFold® louvre roofs
- Pergolas and verandas
- Decks and patios
- Balconies
- Outdoor entertainment areas
- Commercial café or hospitality spaces
With a variety of fabric options available, you can achieve the perfect balance of sun control, privacy, weather protection, and outward visibility.
Why choose external sunshades like Solarzip®?
External blinds are amongst the most effective ways to manage heat and comfort. Installed on the outside of your outdoor living area, Solarzip® blinds reduce heat before it enters the space, which helps you stay cooler in the summer and retain heat during cooler months.
They also offer several other benefits:
- UV protection for outdoor furniture
- Enhanced privacy
- Reduced glare
- Extended usability of your outdoor space year-round
How does the Solarzip® side-fastening system work?
Solarzip® features a unique zip-guided, side-tensioning system that uses a welded zip track, which keeps the fabric securely locked into the side channels. This innovative design helps to:
- Minimise light gaps
- Reduce fabric movement during breezy conditions
- Ensures smooth raising and lowering
- Improves stability and overall weather protection
What dimensions can Solarzip® blinds be made to?
Solarzip® blinds can be manufactured in a wide range of sizes:
Width: 1000 mm - 4000 mm
Drop: 1000 mm - 3000 mm
The maximum size for your installation will depend on fabric selection, system type, and the specific layout of your space. Your Bask® installer can confirm what works best for your project.
Are Solarzip® blinds suitable for windy locations?
While Solarzip® blinds offer excellent stability thanks to their guided side channels, they are not designed to withstand very heavy winds. For safety and longevity, blinds should be fully retracted and secured during strong winds or storms.
Your local Bask® expert will provide advice tailored to your site conditions.
Are the fabrics waterproof?
Solarzip® fabrics are water-repellent and breathable, but not completely waterproof. Over time, the water-repellent finish can be refreshed using Scotchgard™ Repellent Protector as part of routine maintenance.
Do Solarzip® blinds offer UV protection?
Yes. Solarzip® fabrics have been tested to block up to 98% of harmful UV radiation when used in shade applications.
The Cancer Society of New Zealand recommends shade as a key element of sun protection and offers sun‑safe design guidelines at www.cancernz.org.nz.
Can Solarzip® be installed in an area that’s not perfectly square?
Absolutely. Many outdoor structures are slightly out of alignment and not perfectly square, and Solarzip® blinds are designed to accommodate this. The system features built-in side adjustment capability, allowing installers to achieve a neat, accurate fit even in out-of-square openings.
Do Solarzip® fabrics mildew?
The fabrics themselves do not support mildew growth; however, like any outdoor material, mildew may develop if dirt, food, or organic matter accumulates. Keeping the blinds clean is the best way to prevent this.
How do I care for Solarzip® outdoor blinds?
Routine cleaning will extend the life of your Solarzip® blinds and help them operate smoothly.
General maintenance tips:
- Hose down the fabric monthly with clean water to prevent dirt buildup
- Deep clean every 2–3 years, or as required
Cleaning instructions:
- Use lukewarm water and mild detergent: never oil-based sprays
- Clean aluminium components with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water
- Use a soft brush to remove dust from the fabric and side channels
- Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry
- Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive brushes, or high-pressure water
Your installer can provide additional recommendations based on your chosen fabric.
